Mega Charizard Y is roaring back into Pokémon GO raids, and Trainers will want to prepare their strongest teams for this formidable opponent. Mega Charizard Y has a double weakness to Rock-type attacks (due to its Fire and Flying typing).
Mega Charizard Y will return to Mega Raid from Wednesday, October 21, at 6:00 a.m. to Tuesday, October 27, at 9:00 p.m. local time.

In this guide, I break down the best recommended counters, movesets, budget options, and raid tips you need to secure a smooth victory.
Mega Charizard Y Recommended Counters
The following top-tier options deal massive super-effective damage to Mega Charizard Y:
| POKÉMON | RECOMMENDED MOVESET |
| Mega Diancie | Rock Throw as a Fast Attack and Rock Slide as a Charged Attack |
| Shadow Rampardos | Smack Down as a Fast Attack and Rock Slide as a Charged Attack |
| Shadow Rhyperior | Smack Down as a Fast Attack and Rock Wrecker as a Charged Attack |
| Shadow Tyrantrum | Rock Throw as a Fast Attack and Meteor Beam as a Charged Attack |
| Mega Tyranitar | Smack Down as a Fast Attack and Stone Edge as a Charged Attack |
| Mega Aerodactyl | Rock Throw as a Fast Attack and Rock Slide as a Charged Attack |
| Shadow Gigalith | Smack Down (or Lock-On) as a Fast Attack and Meteor Beam as a Charged Attack |
| Shadow Tyranitar | Smack Down as a Fast Attack and Stone Edge as a Charged Attack |
| Rampardos | Smack Down as a Fast Attack and Rock Slide as a Charged Attack |
| Rhyperior | Smack Down as a Fast Attack and Rock Wrecker as a Charged Attack |
Legendary, Shadow, and Mega options output incredible damage, but standard Water-, Rock-, or Electric-type alternatives will easily pull their weight due to its core weaknesses. Remember that you can only use one Mega/Primal Pokémon per raid lobby.
Mega Charizard Y Raid Boss Moveset
When battling Mega Charizard Y, it may utilize any of these moves:
- Fast Attacks: Fire Spin (Fire), Ember (Fire), Dragon Breath (Dragon), Wing Attack (Flying), or Air Slash (Flying)
- Charged Attacks: Flamethrower (Fire), Blast Burn (Fire), Fire Blast (Fire), Overheat (Fire), Dragon Claw (Dragon), or Air Cutter (Flying)
Resistances: Avoid bringing Bug-, Fighting-, Fire-, Grass-, Fairy-, or Steel-type attackers, as Mega Charizard Y heavily resists these types.
Best Mega Charizard Y Budget Counters
If you lack high-tier Shadow or Mega Pokémon, these accessible alternatives deliver strong, reliable damage:
- Rhyperior with Smack Down (Fast) and Rock Wrecker (Charged).
- Aerodactyl with Rock Throw (Fast) and Rock Slide (Charged).
- Gigalith with Smack Down (Fast) and Meteor Beam (Charged).
- Terrakion with Smack Down (Fast) and Rock Slide (Charged).
- Rampardos with Smack Down (Fast) and Rock Slide (Charged).
- Tyranitar with Smack Down (Fast) and Stone Edge (Charged).
Mega Charizard Y Raid Tips
- Lead with a matching Rock-type Mega Evolution (such as Mega Diancie or Mega Tyranitar) to maximize damage output for your team.
- Match Fast and Charged move types on your attackers to leverage STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) and super-effective multipliers.
- Exploit weather boosts for optimal counters: Partly Cloudy weather boosts Rock-type attacks.
How Many Trainers are Needed?
Thanks to its double weakness to Rock-type moves, elite high-level trainers with maxed-out counters can pull off a duo under optimal conditions. For most trainers using standard or budget counters, a safe group of 3 to 5 players ensures a smooth and secure victory.
Hundo CP for Charizard from Raids
After defeating Mega Charizard Y, you will receive Mega Energy, rewards, and an encounter with regular Charizard (you cannot catch it directly in its Mega form).
- Standard Catch CP (Level 20): 1574 – 1651 CP
- Weather Boosted Catch CP (Level 25 – Sunny or Windy): 1968 – 2064 CP
The hundo Charizard will have either a 1651 CP (normal) or 2064 CP (weather-boosted).
Best Moveset for Charizard After Catching
Once you successfully catch your Charizard, you will want to equip it with the best possible moveset for battles:
Best Fire-type Moveset: Fire Spin (Fast) and Blast Burn (Charged — requires an Elite TM).
Best Dragon-type Moveset: Dragon Breath (Fast) and Dragon Claw (Charged).
FUN FACT: Mega Charizard Y made its debut in Pokémon GO on Thursday, August 27, 2020. This was during the Debut of Mega Evolutions in Pokémon GO.
