Gigantamax Machamp is the 9th Gigantamax Pokémon to be released in six-star Max Battles in Pokémon GO. However, this is the first time Trainers will be experiencing Gigantamax Machamp in Pokémon GO.
As we conclude the Season titled Might and Mastery, Gigantamax Machamp will be making its debut in Pokémon GO during the Max Battle Day. This is scheduled for Sunday, May 25, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. You can read more about the Gigantamax Machamp Battle Day Event.

Defeating Gigantamax Machamp
The first thing you need to know is that Gigantamax Battles have a higher level of difficulty as compared to Dynamax Battles. Consequently, the max battle allows a maximum of 40 Pokémon GO Trainers to defeat a Gigantamax Pokémon.
Getting forty (40) Trainers for a Gigantamax Machamp Battle won’t be that difficult in terms of organizing and strategizing. This leads to the second thing you should know. You should max out your chances of victory by joining a Community Ambassador hosted Gigantamax Machamp Max Battle Day.
The Campfire App makes it easier to find both Max Battles and other Trainers. Check out meetups on the Campfire Map that you should join and attend.
Gigantamax Machamp weakness
Gigantamax Machamp is a Fighting-type Pokémon. It is weak to Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon with Fairy-, Flying, and Psychic-type attacks/moves. Thankfully, we have a great Psychic-type Pokémon in the Dynamax form. This is Dynamax Metagross. Likewise, we have some great Flying-type Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon. With these, defeating Gigantamax Machamp should be easier.
Recommended Counters
- A tanker i.e. Gigantamax Venusaur with Grass-type Fast Move i.e. Vine Whip and Grass-type Charged Move i.e. Petal Blizzard.
- An Attacker i.e. Dynamax Metagross with Pyschic-type Fast Move i.e. Zen Headbutt and Psychic-type Charged Move i.e. Psychic.
- An Attacker i.e. Dynamax Moltres with Flying-type Fast Move i.e. Wing Attack and Flying-type Charged Move i.e. Sky Attack.
Other team options as as follows.
- Team 2
- A tanker i.e. Gigantamax Gengar with Ghost-type Fast Move i.e. Shadow Claw and Ghost-type Charged Move i.e. Shadow Punch.
- An Attacker i.e. Dynamax Metagross with Pyschic-type Fast Move i.e. Zen Headbutt and Psychic-type Charged Move i.e. Psychic.
- An Attacker i.e. Dynamax Zapdos with Electric-type Fast Move i.e. Thunder Shock and Flying-type Charged Move i.e. Drill Peck.
Whichever, team you go for, make sure you create a battle party with them before going into the Max Battle. Also, you will want to level up their max moves before you start a battle. The recommended minimum level for the Max Attack, Max Guard, and Max Spirit moves is level 2.
It is important to know that Machamp has access to a Dark-type move called Payback and Rock-type move called Rock Slide. Fire-type Pokémon are weak to Dark- and Rock-type moves. Be careful when using Dynamax Moltres and/or Gigantamax Charizard in your battle team. You can still win with those as long as you have a minimum of 30 Trainers participating in the Gigantamax Battle.
Tips to defeating Gigantamax Machamp
You will need to master team position, dodging, charging, and swapping.
- Team Position: Put your tanker Pokémon in the first (and second spot).
- Attack Dodging: Pay attention to when Gigantamax Machamp is “preparing to attack” and start dodging. You can notice this when your Pokémon has a 3-line signal on its head. It can be hard to dodge all the attacks but you ONLY need to dodge each attack once. Also, note that you cannot dodge the “preparing for large attack”.
- Attack Charging: Rather than charging your Pokémon’s Charge Move/Attack, focus on charging the Max Meter instead. You can do this by tapping on the charging button on your screen. This helps to charge up the max moves faster.
- Pokémon Swapping:
- Swap to your last Pokémon i.e. the ones with the right Max Attack that can do effective damage to Gigantamax Machamp. You should do this when the Max Meter is about to get full or before your Pokémon dynamaxes or gigantamaxes. In addition, you will want to throw 2 Max Attack and 1 Max Guard or 1 Max Spirit.
- Swap to your other bulky/tanker Pokémon (the one with fuller health) after you’re done with the max moves.
- Repeat the two (2) steps above until Gigantamax Machamp faints. However, make sure you swap either to your bulky/tanker during the transformation phase to heal your Pokémon or your attacker during the transformation phase to keep attacking Gigantamax Machamp.
In addition to the above, you will want to do and know the following.
- Level up your Dynamax and Gigantamax Counters’ CP to at least level 40.
- The CP for a hundo or perfect Gigantamax Machamp is 1746 CP.
- Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon are not weather-boosted. The encounter you get after defeating a Max Battle will be at Pokémon level 20.
- You can encounter a Shiny if lucky.
All my best wishes as you go about defeating Gigantamax Machamp.
