The Serene Retreat event starts on Friday, May 30, at 10:00 a.m. local time and continues until Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. local time. You can read more about the event where Gigantamax Rillaboom debuts in Pokémon GO.

Defeating Gigantamax Rillaboom
Gigantamax Rillaboom’s Weakness
Gigantamax Rillaboom is a Grass-type Pokémon. It is weak to either Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon with either Bug-, Fire, Flying-, Ice-, or Poison-type attacks/moves. Thankfully, we have a few great Pokémon in their Dynamax or Gigantamax form that can be used against Gigantamax Rillaboom. With these, defeating Gigantamax Rillaboom should be easier.
In addition, you will be battling Gigantamax Rillaboom with other trainers. As long as you get a minimum of 20 Trainers in total for the battle, you are good to go. However, the other trainers need to be using the recommended counters to be able to successfully defeat Gigantamax Rillaboom.
Gigantamax Rillaboom Recommended Counters
The table below provides you with the best Pokémon you should have in your battle team.
Team 1 | Fast Attack | Charged Attack | Max CP Level | Purpose |

Dynamax Articuno | Ice Shard | Triple Axel | 3051 | Defender/Attacker |
Gigantamax Charizard | Air Slash | Blast Burn or Overheat | 2889 | Attacker |
However, if you do not have these, you can use different team options as follows.
Option 2 | Fast Attack | Charged Attack | Max CP Level | Purpose |
---|---|---|---|---|
Dynamax Corviknight | Air Slash | Brave Bird | 2457 | Tanker |
Dynamax Darmanitan | Fire Fang | Overheat | 3105 | Attacker |
Gigantamax Charizard | Air Slash | Blast Burn or Overheat | 2889 | Attacker |
Option 3 | Fast Attack | Charged Attack | Max CP Level | Purpose |

Whichever, team you go for, make sure you create a battle party with them before going into the Max Battle. Also, you will want to level up their max moves a few days before the Max Battle. The recommended minimum level for the Max Attack, Max Guard, and Max Spirit moves is level 2.

Tips to defeating Gigantamax Rillaboom
You will also need to master team position, dodging, charging, and swapping.
- Team Position: Put your tanker Pokémon in the first (and second spot).
- Attack Dodging: Pay attention to when Gigantamax Rillaboom is “preparing to attack” and start dodging. You can notice this when your Pokémon has a 3-line signal on its head. It can be hard to dodge all the attacks but you ONLY need to dodge each attack once. Also, note that you cannot dodge the “preparing for large attack”.
- Attack Charging: Rather than charging your Pokémon’s Charge Move/Attack, focus on charging the Max Meter instead. You can do this by tapping on the charging button you will notice on your screen. This helps to charge up the max moves faster.
- Pokémon Swapping:
- Swap to your last Pokémon i.e. the ones with the right Max Attack that can do effective damage to Gigantamax Rillaboom. You should do this when the Max Meter is about to get full or before your Pokémon dynamaxes or gigantamaxes. In addition, you will want to throw 2 Max Attack and 1 Max Guard or 1 Max Spirit if your attacker is low on health.
- Swap to your other bulky/tanker Pokémon (the one with fuller health) after you’re done with the max moves.
- Repeat the two (2) steps above until Gigantamax Rillaboom faints. However, make sure you swap either to your bulky/tanker during the transformation phase to heal your Pokémon or your attacker during the transformation phase to keep attacking Gigantamax Rillaboom.
- Cheering: If your battle team dies before the end of the ma battle, ensure you cheer the other trainers still in the battle. You will notice a button on your screen that you can keep tapping.
In addition to the above, you will want to do and know the following.
- Gigantamax Rillaboom takes reduced damage from Pokémon with either Electric-, Grass-, Ground-, or Water-type attacks/moves. Avoid using these Pokémon as an attacker.
- The CP for a hundo or perfect Gigantamax Rillaboom is 1899 CP.
- Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon are not weather-boosted. The encounter you get after defeating a Max Battle will be at Pokémon level 20.
- You currently cannot encounter a Shiny Gigantamax Rillaboom.
All my best wishes as you go about defeating Gigantamax Rillaboom.
PLEASE NOTE: Gigantamax Rillaboom is better than Gigantamax Venusaur as a Grass-type Gigantamax Attacker and as a Grass-type Gigantamax Healer. Check Best Gigantamax Pokémon in Pokémon GO.
