Top Tips & Tricks for Popplio Community Day

The August 2024 Pokémon GO Community Day featuring Popplio, the Sea Lion Pokémon, is on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. The event features Popplio appearing more than usual in the wild. Also, for the first time in Pokémon GO, trainers can encounter Shiny Popplio. As with Community Days, the shiny odds are increased to 1 in 25.

Legacy Attack/Move

During the event (and up till 5 hours after the event), you can fully evolve Popplio into Primarina to get a Primarina that knows Hydro Cannon as a Charged Attack/Move. Hydro Cannon is an exclusive Water-type Charged Attack that deals 80 damage in Trainer Battles (PVP) and 90 damage in Gyms and raids (PVE).

You will need 25 Candy to evolve Popplio into Brionne, and 100 Candy to evolve Brionne into Primarina.

In addition to the exclusive/legacy attack/move, Primarina will be able to learn Sparkling Aria as a Charged Attack. Sparkling Aria is a regular Water-type Charged Attack that deals 80 damage in Trainer Battles (PVP) and 85 damage in Gyms and raids (PVE). You don’t need Elite Charged TM to teach Primarina this attack.

100% IV Popplio

There are many possibilities to encounter a 100% IV Popplio in the wild. You will need to know all the maximum CP for all the different Popplio power-up levels. This varies for boosted weather and non-boosted weather Popplio. You will need to catch as many as you can. The maximum CP a Popplio can have during a boosted weather condition (i.e. Rainy Weather) is 1048 CP at level 35. This would be 967 CP at level 30 in non-boosted weather conditions. These should be guaranteed hundo (i.e. 100% IV Popplio).

Likewise, it is easier to know the CP of a 100% IV Popplio encountered via completing Field or Special Research. The CP of a 100% IV Popplio from field or special research is 483 CP and a power-up level of 15.

Perfect PVP IVs Popplio

If you are looking for a Primarina you can use in the GO Battle League, you should be on the lookout for the following Individual Values (IVs).

To know which Popplio can potentially be used in the GO Battle League while you are playing the Popplio Community Day, you should know the Pokémon GO search strings to mass transfer what you do not need except those with PVP IVs

  • For the Great League, you need a Popplio with 0-15-14 (attack-defense-hp) values. This is a rank 1 Popplio (among 4096 possible Popplio encounters) that you should evolve into Primarina with the exclusive attack.
  • For the Ultra League, you need a Popplio with 2-15-13 (attack-defense-hp) values. This is a rank 1 Popplio (among 4096 possible Popplio encounters) that you should evolve into Primarina.
  • For the Master League, you need a Popplio with 15-15-15 (attack-defense-hp) values. This is a rank 1 Popplio (among 4096 possible Popplio encounters) that you should evolve into Primarina. This is a 100% Popplio IVs.

Currently, you don’t need Popplio for the GO Battle League (especially the Great League). There are better Water- and Fairy-type Pokémon that you can use instead of Primarina. However, you need a good (the best is a perfect IV one) Primarina for raids. As a raid attacker, Popplio is currently the #7 non-mega Water-type Pokémon and #9 non-mega Fairy-type Pokémon.

  • 2x Candy for catching Pokémon
  • 3x XP for catching Pokémon
  • 2x chance for Trainers level 31 and up to receive Candy XL from catching Pokémon

  • Incense (excluding Daily Adventure Incense) activated during the event will last for three hours.
  • Take five snapshots during Community Day for encounters with Popplio.

XP Gain

One of the event’s bonuses is 3x XP for catching Pokémon. You can gain up to 500,000 XP or more if you catch as many as you can (with Excellent Throws) while using Lucky Eggs for the entire duration of the event. This is because catch XP is a minimum of 100 XP. An excellent throw gives 1000 XP per catch. 3x Catch XP makes it 3000 XP per catch. This becomes 6000 XP per catch. If you catch 100 Popplio with excellent throws, that’s 600,000 XP. To put this in perspective, that is about the amount of XP needed to move from level 1 to level 24 in Pokémon GO.

Candy Gain

You can also gain a lot of candy if you catch as many as you can since one of the event’s bonuses is 2x candy for catching Pokémon. Also, make sure you use a max-level mega Pokémon for the entire duration of the Popplio Community Day Classic. The best Pokémon to mega-evolve is any Water-type Pokémon that can be mega-evolved (or as a Primal). The best one I would recommend is a Mega (level 3) Primal Groudon. Others you can mega evolve are either Mega Blastoise, Mega Slowbro, Mega Gyarados or Mega Swampert. In addition to using a Mega Pokémon, you should also use Pinap (or Silver) Berries while catching.

Platinum Medals

These are the platinum medals you should work on.

  • Water-type medal: catch a lot of Popplio to increase your count toward 2500 Water-type Pokémon caught.
  • Cameraman medal: snap your Buddy 5 times to increase your count towards 400 Snapshots.
  • Picknicker: drop Lure Modules (especially Rainy Lure Module) on PokéStops to increase your count towards 2500 Pokémon caught by other trainers from your Lure Module.
  • Showcase Star: drop your largest Popplio or Primarina in PokéStop Showcases for the chance to win and increase your count towards 100 Showcase wins.
  • Tiny Pokémon and Jumbo Pokémon Collector: you can’t control what size of Popplio you get during the Community Day. However, you can control the increase in the count of these medals. You need 500 of each to get a Platinum medal. If you catch one XXS or XXL Popplio and fully evolve it into Primarina, that increases your count by 3.

Field Research Tasks

Field research tasks awarding additional encounters with Popplio or 500 Stardust or 5 Great Balls or 2 Ultra Balls, or 2 Pinap Berries will be available between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time. The research task is as follows;

  • Catch 3 Popplio.

If you get a (Shiny) Popplio with 483 CP, that’s a (s)hundo!

PokéStop Showcases

There will be PokéStop showcases featuring Popplio and Primarina. Make sure you enter your largest Popplio and Primarina to increase your chances of getting some rewards when the showcase ends on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time. Also, each showcase win counts towards the Showcase Star medal that awards an encounter with Phd Pikachu.

Finally, make sure you catch ’em all. This is the basic requirement to get anything good from this event. If you want something great, then you’ve got to put in extra effort on the tips and tricks you just read.
