How to Defeat Gigantamax Snorlax

Gigantamax Snorlax is the 8th Gigantamax Pokémon to be released in six-star Max Battles in Pokémon GO. However, this is the first time Trainers will be experiencing Gigantamax Snorlax in Pokémon GO.

As we progress into the new Season titled Might and Mastery, Gigantamax Snorlax will be making its debut in Pokémon GO during the Max Battle Day. This is scheduled for Saturday, April 19, at 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. You can read more about the Gigantamax Battle Day Event.

In case you missed it, these are the seven (7) previously released Gigantamax Pokémon in Pokémon GO.

  • Gigantamax Venusaur
  • Gigantamax Charizard
  • Gigantamax Blastoise
  • Gigantamax Gengar
  • Gigantamax Kingler
  • Gigantamax Lapras
  • Gigantamax Toxtricity

Defeating Gigantamax Snorlax

The first thing you need to know is that Gigantamax Battles have a higher level of difficultly as compared to Dynamax Battles. Consequently, the max battle allows a maximum of 40 Pokémon GO Trainers to defeat a Gigantamax Pokémon.

Getting forty (40) Trainers for a Gigantamax Snorlax Battle won’t be that difficult in terms of organizing and strategizing. This leads to the second thing you should know. You should max our your chances of victory by joining a Community Ambassador hosted Gigantamax Snorlax Max Battle Day.

The Campfire App makes it easier to find both Max Battles and other Trainers. Check out meetups on the Campfire Map that you should join and attend.

Gigantamax Snorlax weakness

Snorlax is a Normal-type Pokémon. It is weak to Fighting-type Pokémon attacks/moves. Thankfully, we have a great Fighting-type Pokémon in the Dynamax form. This is Machamp. Machamp is a Fighting-type Pokémon that can learn Fighting-type attacks/moves. Other Fighting-types are Dynamax Falinks and Dynamax Kubfu which can learn Fighting-type Attacks/Moves. With these, defeating Gigantamax Snorlax should be easier.

Recommended Gigantamax Snorlax Counters

  • Dynamax Blissey with Normal-type Fast Move i.e. Pound and Fairy-type Charged Move i.e. Dazzling Gleam.
  • Dynamax Machamp with Fighting-type Fast Move i.e. Counter and Fighting-type Charged Move i.e. Dynamic Punch.
  • Dynamax Machamp with Fighting-type Fast Move i.e. Counter and Fighting-type Charged Move i.e. Cross Chop.

Please note that Gigantamax Snorlax takes reduced damage from Dynamax Blissey. Dynamax Blissey is in the first spot to serve as a tanker. Also, you can just replace Dynamax Blissey with a Dynamax Machamp that has Fighting-type Fast and Charged Moves. This means you could also use a 3-Pokémon team full of Dynamax Machamps.

Whichever, team you go for, make sure you create a battle party with them before going into the Max Battle. Also, you will want to level up their max moves before you start a battle. The recommended minimum level for the Max Attack, Max Guard, and Max Spirit moves is level 2.

Tips to defeating Gigantamax Snorlax

You will need to master team position, dodging, charging, and swapping.

  • Team Position: Put your bulky Pokémon in the first and second spot e.g. Dynamax Blissey and Dynamax Machamp.
  • Attack Dodging: Pay attention to when Gigantamax Snorlax is “preparing to attack” and start dodging. You can notice this when your Pokémon has a 3-line signal on its head. It can be hard to dodge all the attacks but you ONLY need to dodge each attack once. Also, note that you cannot dodge the “preparing for large attack”.
  • Attack Charging: Rather than charging your Pokémon’s Charge Move/Attack, focus on charging the Max Meter instead. You can do this by tapping on the charging button on your screen. This helps to charge up the max moves faster.
  • Pokémon Swapping: Swap your Pokémon to the ones with the right Max Attack that can do effective damage to Gigantamax Snorlax i.e. Dynamax Machamp. You should do this when the Max Meter is about to get full or before your Pokémon dynamaxes. In addition, you will want to throw 2 Max Attack and 1 Max Guard or Max Spirit. Make sure you swap back to your bulky Pokémon after you’re done with the max moves.

In addition to the above, you will want to do and know the following.

  • Level up your Dynamax Pokémon (i.e. its CP) at least level 40.
  • The CP for a hundo or perfect Gigantamax Snorlax is 1843 CP.
  • Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon are not weather-boosted. The encounter you get after defeating a Max Battle will be at Pokémon level 20.
  • You can encounter a Shiny if lucky.

All my best wishes as you go about defeating Gigantamax Snorlax.
