Mega Garchomp Recommended Counters in Pokémon GO (August 2026)

Discover the best Mega Garchomp counters, recommended movesets, budget options, and raid strategies for its upcoming Pokémon GO appearance in August 2026.

Mega Garchomp is a pseudo-legendary dual Dragon- and Ground-type Pokémon that is vulnerable to Ice-, Dragon-, and Fairy-type attacks. Because of its dual typing, it possesses a notable double-weakness to Ice-type attacks, alongside standard weaknesses to Dragon and Fairy.

A well-prepared team of high-DPS Ice, Dragon, or Fairy-type Pokémon can bring it down efficiently. Bringing the right counters will make all the difference if you are planning to farm Mega Energy, hunt for a shiny, or simply add Mega Garchomp to your collection.

FUN FACT: Mega Garchomp made its debut in Pokémon GO on November 11, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. local time.

Mega Garchomp Raid Boss Moveset

When battling Mega Garchomp in raids, it will utilize its own set of Fast and Charged attacks. Being aware of its moveset helps you anticipate incoming damage:

  • Fast Attacks: Mud Shot (Ground), Dragon Tail (Dragon)

  • Charged Attacks: Earthquake (Ground), Fire Blast (Fire), Sand Tomb (Ground), Outrage (Dragon), and Earth Power (Ground). (Note: Watch out for Fire Blast if you are bringing Ice-type counters like Mega Abomasnow!)

Resistances: Avoid bringing Pokémon that rely on Electric, Fire, Poison, or Rock-type attacks, as Mega Garchomp resists these damage types.

Best Mega Garchomp Budget Counters

Not everyone currently has access to high-tier Shadow Pokémon or legendary ice options. Fortunately, Mega Garchomp’s double-weakness makes it accessible with strong non-legendary choices. Excellent budget choices are as follows:

  • Mamoswine with Powder Snow as a Fast Attack and Avalanche as a Charged Attack.

  • Galarian Darmanitan with Ice Fang as a Fast Attack and Avalanche as a Charged Attack.

  • Weavile with Ice Shard as a Fast Attack and Triple Axel as a Charged Attack.

  • Glaceon with Frost Breath as a Fast Attack and Avalanche as a Charged Attack.

  • Hisuian Avalugg with Ice Fang as a Fast Attack and Avalanche as a Charged Attack.

  • Granbull with Charm as a Fast Attack and Play Rough as a Charged Attack.

Mega Garchomp Raid Tips

Having the best counters may not be enough. You also need a good strategy. The following tips will help you a great deal:

  • Lead with a Mega Ice or Mega Dragon Pokémon to boost teammates’ corresponding attacks.

  • Coordinate Mega Evolutions with your raid group for maximum efficiency.

  • Use Pokémon with matching Fast and Charged Moves (e.g., full Ice-type sets).

  • Revive and rejoin if necessary rather than using weaker backup teams.

  • If you can, battle Mega Garchomp during Snow (boosts Ice) or Windy (boosts Dragon) weather conditions in-game for an extra damage edge.

How Many Trainers are Needed?

Due to Mega Garchomp’s double weakness to Ice-type attacks, it is much less bulky than other difficult Mega Raid bosses. In ideal conditions with top-tier counters like Shadow Mamoswine, it can even be defeated by 2 prepared players. However, for most trainers utilizing standard or budget counters, a group of 3 to 5 players will comfortably defeat Mega Garchomp.

Hundo CP for Garchomp from Raids

You will get rewards such as Garchomp Mega Energy, other items, and an encounter with regular Garchomp after completing the Mega Raid successfully.

The hundo CP (i.e., the perfect IV CP) for Garchomp caught from raids depends on the in-game weather condition when it was caught. If caught during Sunny (boosts Ground) or Windy (boosts Dragon) weather conditions, the hundo CP is 2830 CP. Otherwise, the standard hundo CP (Level 20) is 2264 CP.

For a complete overview of what to expect when catching Garchomp post-raid, keep an eye out for these CP ranges:

  • Standard Catch CP (Level 20): 2,174 – 2,264 CP.

  • Weather Boosted Catch CP (Level 25): 2,718 – 2,830 CP.

If you get a good one, teach it Mud Shot as a Fast Attack and Earth Power (Legacy) and Outrage as Charged Attacks for its premier Ground-type roles. However, for its Dragon-type roles, teach it Dragon Tail as a Fast Attack and Breaking Swipe and Outrage as Charged Attacks.
