Customizing your Trainer profile with Buddy Pokémon backgrounds is officially coming to Pokémon GO. Scopely Explore has officially unveiled a long-awaited cosmetic enhancement arriving alongside Pokémon GO Wild Area 2026.
Starting with this year’s flagship event, players and their friends will finally be able to display Location Backgrounds and Special Backgrounds attached to their active Buddy Pokémon directly on their Trainer profiles.
This aesthetic overhaul allows players to showcase rare catches, memorable travels, and major event participation across every connected friend list.

Profile with Buddy Pokémon Backgrounds
For years, collectible Location Backgrounds and Special Backgrounds were restricted to individual Pokémon detail pages. While catching a legendary Pokémon at an in-person event or securing a rare location card during global festivities carried immense bragging rights, showing those achievements off meant navigating through deep menus during trades. The new Trainer profile integration brings those showcase cards to the forefront.
When viewing a friend’s profile, their set Buddy Pokémon will no longer stand against a standard generic backdrop. Instead, if that buddy possesses an eligible Location or Special Background, it will dynamically render behind the Pokémon on the main profile screen. This visual update offers a layer of personalization that rewards dedicated collectors and live-event attendees who wish to frame their favorite buddies with iconic cityscapes or thematic event art.

Profile with Buddy Pokémon Backgrounds Rollout Schedule
Scopely Explore is implementing a phased rollout schedule to introduce profile background rendering. The staggered deployment ensures server stability while aligning with local event kickoffs in real-world hosting cities:
November 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. local time: The initial phase kicks off exclusively for event attendees in Sendai, Japan, and Mexico City, Mexico. Buddy Pokémon holding the GO Wild Area 2026 Location Backgrounds for these two cities will start displaying on profiles immediately.
November 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. local time: Global activation begins. From this point onward, the official GO Wild Area 2026 Special Background, alongside all previously released Location Backgrounds from past GO Fest and Safari Zone events, will become available for profile display worldwide.
A key technical detail regarding cross-timezone friendship interaction involves local time triggers. Background displays unlock according to individual local clocks. If a player unlocks the feature in an earlier timezone, friends living in later timezones will not see the rendered background on that player’s profile until 10:00 a.m. local time arrives in their own respective regions.
