Shadow Legendaries are arguably the best form of Pokémon you want to have in your Pokémon GO storage. This is because of their 20% attack bonus in battles. Likewise, they are rare to get. If you do have their non-shadow normal forms, you will do just fine. However, you will want to have these in your battle party, especially in raids.
There are two main ways to obtain Shadow Legendaries in Pokémon GO. One way is via the encounter you get after winning Shadow Legendary Raids. The other is via the encounter you get after defeating Giovanni, the Team GO Rocket boss.
Shadow Legendaries from Giovanni
Giovanni Rotation History
Giovanni gets featured once in a while in Pokémon GO. This happens during the Team GO Rocket events. Pokémon GO Trainers get the opportunity to battle a lot of Grunts, the leaders (i.e., Sierra, Cliff, Arlo), and Giovanni.
The Team GO Rocket events now come with an event-themed GO Pass that allows Trainers to obtain a Super Rocket Radar. You need a Super Rocket Radar to locate and Battle Giovanni. You only get to lose the Super Rocket Radar if you defeat Giovanni.
- You battle Grunts to get Mysterious Components
- You get to locate and battle either Sierra, Cliff, or Arlo after accumulating six (6) Mysterious Components.
- You need six (6) Mysterious Components to battle each of the leaders.
- Based on the event GO Pass, you get a Super Rocket Radar after reaching a certain rank. You could get the Super Rocket Radar at rank 1 if you purchase a paid version of the event GO Pass.
UPDATE (April 2026): Super Rocket Radars are now exclusively obtained through the Team GO Rocket-themed event GO Pass.
Unlike previously, where trainers had to complete a multi-step Special Research story, the current mechanic relies on the event GO Pass.
The Free Track: All trainers get access to a free event GO pass. By completing basic event tasks, you earn GO Points towards your GO Pass rank. The Super Rocket Radar is unlocked upon reaching a specific milestone rank.
The Paid Track: An optional premium version of the GO Pass is usually available in the shop. Purchasing this track often awards the Super Rocket Radar immediately at Rank 1, alongside extra Mysterious Components, Stardust, and Rare Candies.
Skipping the Leaders: Because the radar is tied to Pass progression rather than a rigid questline, you no longer have to defeat Sierra, Cliff, and Arlo before you can challenge Giovanni. However, defeating them still yields rewards.

Shadow Raid Mechanics & Purified Gems
Shadow Legendary Raids introduce a unique mechanic that sets them apart from standard Tier 5 raids. When a Shadow Legendary Raid Boss enters an enraged state, its attack and defense stats skyrocket, making it nearly impossible to defeat through brute force alone.
To counter this, trainers must utilize Purified Gems:
Shadow Shards: Defeating Team GO Rocket Grunts and Leaders awards Shadow Shards.
Shard: Collecting 4 Shadow Shards automatically converts them into a single Purified Gem.
Subduing the Boss: During a raid, trainers can use their Purified Gems. Once the raiding party collectively uses 8 Purified Gems, the Shadow Legendary Boss will be subdued, returning its stats to normal and allowing you to finish the battle smoothly.
Shadow Legendaries Strategy Guide: To Purify or Not?
Whenever you rescue a Shadow Legendary, you are faced with a choice: leave it as a Shadow or hit the “Purify” button. In almost every single scenario, you should keep it as a Shadow Pokémon.
The 20% Shadow Damage Bonus
Shadow Pokémon receive a passive 20% bonus to their Attack stat in exchanges for a 20% reduction in their Defense stat. In the context of Raid Battles, maximizing damage per second (DPS) is everything.
To put this into perspective, a Shadow Legendary with 0/0/0 IVs will comfortably out-damage a non-shadow, 15/15/15 100% IV (Hundo) version of the exact same Pokémon. For PvE and raiding, the Shadow form is always superior.
When is Purification Acceptable?
Purification increases a Pokémon’s individual IV stats by +2 in every category and raises its level to 25 instantly. The only times you should consider purifying a Legendary are:
Master League PvP Niches: Certain Legendary Pokémon prefer the extra bulk in the GO Battle League. Using a purified version may be better than its Shadow variant.
The Perfect Hundo Trophy: If you have a 13/13/13 Shadow Legendary and want a perfect 100% IV Purified Pokémon purely for collection purposes, though this comes at a heavy cost to its battle performance.
Removing Frustration
By default, all Shadow Pokémon know the Charged Attack Frustration. This move is entirely useless in battle and cannot be changed using a standard TM under normal circumstances.
To make your Shadow Legendary viable, you must wait for a Team GO Rocket Takeover event. During these specific event windows, Niantic allows trainers to use a standard Charged TM to remove Frustration and teach the Pokémon a meta-relevant move. Always hoard standard Charged TMs ahead of these events so you can upgrade your backlog of Shadow Legendaries
I hope you found this list useful. Thanks for reading.
