Rare Candy is one of the most valuable resources in Pokémon GO because it can be converted into Candy for almost any Pokémon. However, that flexibility also makes Rare Candy easy to waste. Using it on a Pokémon that can regularly be caught in the wild or farmed during events is usually a poor investment. Instead, Rare Candy is most valuable when it is used on Legendary Pokémon, Mythical Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, or other difficult-to-farm species that have strong long-term value.
As of September 2026, the best strategy is to prioritize Pokémon that are powerful in raids, Master League, or multiple forms of gameplay. Current 2026 PvE rankings continue to place Pokémon such as Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, Mega Rayquaza, Mega Mewtwo, Black Kyurem, White Kyurem, Necrozma, Eternatus, and other high-end Legendary Pokémon among the strongest investments.
Rare Candy-worthy Pokémon in Pokémon GO
Groudon
Groudon is one of the safest places to spend Rare Candy, particularly if you are building a powerful Ground-type raid team.
Its Primal form is especially important. Primal Groudon remains one of the strongest Ground attackers in Pokémon GO, and its Primal boost also increases the damage of other Pokémon in raids. With Mud Shot and Precipice Blades, it is an exceptional Ground-type attacker and has significant utility against Electric-, Fire-, Poison-, Rock-, and Steel-type opponents.
If you have a strong Groudon with good IVs and access to Primal Groudon, investing Rare Candy into it can provide excellent long-term value.
Rayquaza
Rayquaza is another excellent Rare Candy investment.
Mega Rayquaza remains one of the premier attackers in Pokémon GO and provides exceptional value because it can function as both a Dragon- and Flying-type powerhouse. Current PvE rankings continue to place Mega Rayquaza among the elite Pokémon for raid battles.
Rayquaza is particularly attractive because Candy can be difficult to accumulate outside of events and raids. If you already have a high-IV Rayquaza that you intend to Mega Evolve, Rare Candy can accelerate the process of powering it up.
Kyogre
Kyogre is one of the best Legendary Pokémon for players who want a strong Water-type investment.
Primal Kyogre has tremendous raid value and can provide team-wide benefits during raids. It is particularly useful against Fire-, Ground-, and Rock-type opponents.
If you already have a high-IV Kyogre and enough Primal Energy to use its Primal form, Rare Candy is a strong investment. Current 2026 rankings continue to include Primal Kyogre among the highest-value PvE investments.
Necrozma
Necrozma deserves special consideration because its two major fused forms, Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma, give it tremendous strategic value.
Both forms remain highly relevant for PvE, while Necrozma and its forms can also be useful in other areas of Pokémon GO. Current 2026 attacker rankings continue to place Dawn Wings Necrozma among the top raid options.
Necrozma Candy is not something most players can continuously farm like common Pokémon candy, Rare Candy can be useful when you are trying to build or strengthen one of its fused forms.
Black Kyurem and White Kyurem
Kyurem became an especially interesting investment because of its fused forms.
Black Kyurem and White Kyurem offer different offensive roles, making Kyurem Candy potentially valuable for players building specialized raid teams.
However, there is an important distinction: don’t spend all your resources simply because you own regular Kyurem. The fused forms require their associated fusion resources, and regular Kyurem raids do not automatically provide everything needed for the fused forms.
If you already have the necessary fusion resources and a strong Kyurem, Rare Candy can be worthwhile.
Mewtwo
Mewtwo remains a classic Rare Candy target because of its combination of high Attack and versatility.
Its importance becomes even greater when considering its Mega forms. Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are among the strongest high-end investments in the 2026 PvE environment.
A good Mewtwo is therefore an excellent candidate for Rare Candy, particularly if you intend to build it for high-level PvE content.
Shadow Mewtwo is an even more specialized investment. If you have a strong Shadow Mewtwo with good IVs and the appropriate moves, investing resources into it can produce an extremely powerful attacker.
Eternatus
Eternatus is another Legendary worth considering in September 2026.
It has strong offensive potential and appears in current high-end PvE and Master League rankings.
Eternatus Candy can be considerably harder to accumulate than Candy for regularly available Pokémon, Rare Candy can help accelerate an Eternatus.
Use Rare Candy on Legendary Pokémon for Master League
Rare Candy isn’t exclusively for raid attackers.
If you are a Master League player, Pokémon such as Crowned Sword Zacian, Crowned Shield Zamazenta, Black Kyurem, Palkia, Dialga, Ho-Oh, and other high-level Legendary Pokémon can justify substantial Candy investment.
Master League is particularly expensive because competitive Pokémon often need to reach very high levels and require significant amounts of Candy XL and Stardust. Current 2026 rankings continue to identify several of these Legendary Pokémon as strong Master League choices.
For this reason, Rare Candy should generally be directed toward a specific Master League project rather than randomly distributed among several Legendary Pokémon.
Mythical Pokémon from Special Research Tasks
Currently, you can’t catch these Pokémon in the wild to get more candy to power them up. Therefore, you can use your Rare Candy on these Pokémon you got from Special-event Research. Do not worry about their IVs.
Pokémon You Should Usually NOT Spend Rare Candy On
Rare Candy is too valuable to use indiscriminately.
Avoid spending large amounts on Pokémon that you can easily obtain through regular gameplay. Examples include common wild spawns, frequently featured Community Day Pokémon, and species that regularly appear during events.
For example, using 100 Rare Candy on a Pokémon that you can catch dozens of times during an event is generally inefficient. You could instead save those Rare Candy for a Legendary that requires raids or 20 km of walking per Candy.
The general rule is simple:
If you can easily farm the Pokémon, don’t use Rare Candy on it.
What About Candy XL?
There is an important distinction between Rare Candy and Candy XL.
Rare Candy becomes regular Candy. It does not automatically solve your Candy XL requirements for powering a Pokémon beyond Level 40. If your objective is to build a Level 50 Legendary Pokémon, you will need substantial amounts of Candy XL as well as Stardust.
This means players should avoid converting all their Rare Candy immediately. First, decide which Pokémon you actually want to build.
Final Ranking
For a player deciding where to spend Rare Candy in September 2026, a practical priority list is:
- Groudon / Primal Groudon
- Rayquaza / Mega Rayquaza
- Kyogre / Primal Kyogre
- Necrozma, especially Dusk Mane or Dawn Wings
- Mewtwo / Mega Mewtwo
- Black Kyurem / White Kyurem
- Eternatus
- Crowned Sword Zacian / Crowned Shield Zamazenta
- Other Master League Legendary projects
- Specialized Legendary or Mythical Pokémon you cannot easily farm
Ultimately, the best Pokémon to use Rare Candy on is not necessarily the Pokémon ranked #1 on a tier list. It is the Pokémon that fills an important role on your account and is difficult for you to obtain Candy for.
If you already have a fully powered Primal Groudon, for example, spending another 200 Rare Candy on Groudon may provide less value than using that Candy to finish a strong Necrozma, Mewtwo, Kyurem, or Master League project.
The best strategy for September 2026 is therefore to save Rare Candy for high-value and high IV (preferably hundo) Legendary, Mythical, and other difficult-to-farm Pokémon, prioritize Pokémon with strong PvE or PvP utility, and avoid spending it on Pokémon whose Candy can easily be obtained through wild catches or recurring events. Legendary Pokémon have historically been particularly good Rare Candy targets because they are not normally available as regular wild catches and often require raids or long-distance Buddy walking to accumulate Candy.
