Whether you’re hunting for that striking blue Shiny form, stocking up on candy to power up a high-IV Mega Houndoom, or looking to maximize the hours bonus, this hour offers the perfect opportunity to boost your storage and battle lineup.
Here is everything you need to know to prepare for the event in September 2026!
What is Houndour Spotlight Hour?
The Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour takes place weekly, turning the spotlight on a specific Pokémon. For one full hour, the featured Pokémon spawns drastically more frequently in the wild.
For the Houndour Spotlight Hour, trainers will see Houndour swarming everywhere, paired with a special event bonus. Additionally, Trainers may encounter its evolution, Houndoom, in the wild. This Houndour Spotlight Hour provides a great designated window to stack up candy and secure high-IV forms.
- Date & Time: Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Local Time)
- Featured Pokémon: Houndour and Houndoom
- Active Bonus for the hour: 2× Candy for transferring Pokémon.
Houndour Spotlight Hour & Evolution Costs
Houndour is a dual Dark and Fire-type Pokémon from Generation 2 known as the Dark Pokémon. It requires 50 Houndour Candy to evolve it into its evolution, Houndoom. Houndoom can mega evolve into Mega Houndoom by using the required Houndoom Mega Energy (or none during rest periods).
Houndoom featured during this hour can also be wild-encountered alongside Houndour.
To maximize your candy earnings, toss Pinap Berries at wild Pokémon before catching them.
Please note that the Mega Squads event will be on while the Houndour Spotlight hour starts and ends. During the Mega Squads event, Mega Houndoom will be able to learn an additional charge attack called Dark Pulse+. Likewise, Mega Houdoom is featured in Mega Raids from September 11 to September 15, 2026.
Can Houndour and Houndoom be Shiny?
Yes! Both Houndour and Houndoom have their Shiny forms unlocked in Pokémon GO.
Shiny Houndour: Swaps its dark black skin for a distinct, bright blue body while keeping its orange muzzle accent.
Shiny Houndoom: Trades its jet-black fur for a vibrant, royal blue tone.
It’s important to note that Spotlight Hour does not increase shiny odds. However, because Houndour will appear much more frequently throughout the event, you’ll have many more opportunities to encounter a shiny compared to normal gameplay.
The best strategy is simple:
Catch as many as possible to gather candy for evolutions and power-ups.
Walk through areas with dense spawn points.
Use Incense while moving.
Place Lure Modules on PokéStops.
Use the Quick Catch technique to maximize encounters.
Is Houndour Worth Catching?
Yes, Houndour is definitely worth catching, especially during its Spotlight Hour. While standard Houndour isn’t a powerhouse, catching it offers several unique and practical benefits in Pokémon GO:
Mega Houndoom is an Elite Attacker: Mega Houndoom is a top-tier PvE counter in Raids. It serves as one of the strongest Dark-type and Fire-type raid attackers in the game, boosting damage output for both types during Raid Battles.
Great League & Ultra League Spice: Houndoom sees niche play in the GO Battle League, particularly in themed Cups (like Halloween Cup). Access to Snarl, Foul Play, and Flamethrower allows it to deal fast, heavy damage to Psychic and Ghost-types.
Type Medal Progression: Catching dual Dark and Fire types helps speed up progress toward the gold and platinum Deliquent and Kindler medals, which grant permanent catch bonuses for Dark and Fire Pokémon.
Tips to Prepare for Houndour Spotlight Hour
Stock Up on Poké Balls and Berries: Spawns will be relentless for 60 minutes, so load up on Poké Balls. Pair Pinap Berries with your catches to pile up extra candy.
Utilize Mega Evolutions: Activate a Mega-Evolved Dark or Fire-type Pokémon (such as Mega Houndoom itself, Mega Charizard Y, or Mega Tyranitar) to gain extra candy per catch.
Clear Your Pokémon Storage: Ensure you have plenty of storage space before 6:00 p.m. so you don’t waste time transferring mid-event. Take advantage of the 2× Transfer Candy bonus during the hour to clear out unwanted legendary or rare Pokémon saved in your box.
Activate Items: Pop a Star Piece or Incense to maximize your time while catching back-to-back Pokémon.
Use Quick Catch: Hold and drag the Poké Ball/Berry menu icon while throwing the ball with your other hand. Tap to skip the catch animation and flee the encounter to save precious time.
Play in High-Spawn Locations: Parks, shopping centers, and downtown areas generally provide the highest concentration of wild Pokémon.
Activate an Adventure Effect: Activating Palkia’s Spacial Rend Adventure Effect will allow you to see and encounter wild Pokémon from a wider distance.
