Mega Houndoom Recommended Counters in Pokémon GO (September 2026)

Mega Houndoom is a dual Dark- and Fire-type Pokémon that possesses weaknesses to Fighting-, Ground-, Rock-, and Water-type attacks. Taking advantage of these weaknesses with top-tier counters will allow you to quickly defeat this raid boss, harvest Mega Energy, or hunt for its shiny form

Mega Houndoom will be available in Mega Raids in Pokémon GO from Friday, September 11, at 6:00 a.m. to Tuesday, September 15, at 9:00 p.m. local time.

Mega Houndoom Raid Boss Moveset

When battling Mega Houndoom, it will only utilize Dark- and/or Fire-type moves:

  • Fast Attacks: Snarl (Dark) or Fire Fang (Fire)

  • Charged Attacks: Crunch (Dark), Foul Play (Dark), Flamethrower (Fire), or Fire Blast (Fire)

  • Resistances: Avoid bringing Psychic-, Dark-, Fire-, Ghost-, Grass-, Ice-, or Steel-type attackers, as Mega Houndoom resists all of these types.

Best Mega Houndoom Budget Counters

If you do not have high-tier Shadow or Mega Pokémon, there are plenty of accessible non-legendary counters that deal impressive damage:

  • Rhyperior with Mud-Slap (Fast) and Rock Wrecker (Charged).

  • Swampert with Water Gun (Fast) and Hydro Cannon (Charged).

  • Machamp or Conkeldurr with Counter (Fast) and Dynamic Punch (Charged).

  • Rampardos with Smack Down (Fast) and Rock Slide (Charged).

  • Kyogre with Waterfall (Fast) and Surf (Charged).

Mega Houndoom Raid Tips

  • Lead with a Mega or Primal option (such as Primal Kyogre or Mega Lucario) to boost matching Water or Fighting moves for your entire raid team.

  • Coordinate Mega Evolutions with your group for overlapping attack damage boosts.

  • Match Fast and Charged move types on your attackers to maximize damage output.

  • Take advantage of weather boosts: Rainy (Water), Partly Cloudy (Rock), Cloudy (Fighting), or Sunny/Clear (Ground).

How Many Trainers are Needed?

Mega Houndoom possesses a high attack stat, but its moderate defense allows a duo of high-level trainers with optimal counters to complete the raid under weather boosts. For most trainers using standard or budget counters, a group of 3 to 5 players ensures a quick and clean victory.

Hundo CP for Houndoom from Raids

After defeating Mega Houndoom, you will receive Mega Energy and encounter standard Houndoom.

  • Standard Catch CP (Level 20): 1432 – 1505 CP

  • Weather Boosted Catch CP (Level 25 – Fog/Sunny): 1790 – 1882 CP

The hundo Houndoom will have either a 1505 CP or 1882 CP.

If you get a good one, teach it Snarl as a Fast Attack and Foul Play plus Flamethrower as Charged Attacks for its optimal Dark/Fire raid and PvP utility.

Additionally, Mega Houndoom will have access to an additional Charge Attack called Dark Pulse+ when you mega-evolve it after the Mega Squads event starts. Likewise, Mega Houndoom is the featured Pokémon in Mega Raids from September 11 to September 15, 2026.

FUN FACT: Mega Houndoom made its debut on September 29, 2020, after the global unlock challenge during the Mega September event series.
